Meet Your Instructor
My name is Ashelyn Downs
I'm a quilt pattern designer, art quilter, and educator. I'm so excited to be a 2025 QuiltCon faculty member and to once again share my workshops with the MQG! I currently live and create fiber art just North of Salt Lake City and spend my non-creative time running my kids around in the sexiest minivan imaginable.

There isn't a hard and defined rule as to which fabrics you choose for your improv project (it's YOUR quilt!), but I've assembled some helpful tips for picking your fabrics!
Need help with your fabric pull, live far from a modern shop, or just don't have the brain space to make decisions?
I got you.
Not everyone has Sewtopia in their backyard and I recognize how difficult fabric shopping can be for those without many modern in-person fabric options, so
I've assembled a few fabric interactive pull mood boards using Canva.com and from there, you can click on the swatches and they will lead you directly to the product page at the featured shop.
How Much Fabric?
-
Low volume fabrics: 4-6 fat quarters
-
Focal/Favorite fabrics: 4 fat quarters
-
Solid fabrics: 4-6 fat quarters
-
Textural Fabrics (linens/wovens): 4 fat quarters
