Meet Your Instructor

My name is Ashelyn Downs

I'm a first-time QuiltCon faculty member and am so excited to be a part of this amazing event! I currently live and create fiber art just North of Salt Lake City and spend my non-creative time running my kids around in the sexiest minivan imaginable.

There isn't a hard and defined rule as to which fabrics you choose for your improv project (it's YOUR quilt!), but I've assembled some helpful tips for picking your fabrics!

Need help with your fabric pull, live far from a modern shop, or just don't have the brain space to make decisions?

I got you.

Not everyone has Sewtopia in their backyard and I recognize how difficult fabric shopping can be for those without many modern in-person fabric options, so

I've assembled a few fabric interactive pull mood boards using Canva.com and from there, you can click on the swatches and they will lead you directly to the product page at the featured shop.

How Much Fabric?

  • Low volume fabrics: 4-6 fat quarters

  • Focal/Favorite fabrics: 4 fat quarters

  • Solid fabrics: 4-6 fat quarters

  • Textural Fabrics (linens/wovens): 4 fat quarters

What To Bring

One perk of attending a QuiltCon workshop are that just about everything is provided!

Here is my short list of recommended supplies to bring with you!

  • Your Complete Fabric Pull

  • Basic supply kit: small snips, seam ripper, clips/pins

  • A thread color that is cohesive with your fabric pull. Machines will come prepared with light-colored thread.
