Quilt In A Day With The New City Planning Quilt Pattern

With the release of the all-new City Planning Quilt Pattern, I've been busy making samples and preparing for the launch! However, as I got closer to this week, I realized that I may not have time to make the "Crib" size version in time for launch, but leave it to me to find a way to kill two birds with one stone!

I had committed to participate in a special Quilt Drive blog hop for Comfort Cases hosted by Stacey Lee Creative and I really wanted to feature a "Make In A Day" quilt using one of my patterns. So, what better way to problem solve than to use my upcoming City Planning Quilt as the featured pattern?

The purpose of this quilt drive is to help introduce our lovely quilting community to the amazing organization of Comfort Cases, who provide in-kind items to children in the foster care system. In this case, they've partnered with Moda Fabrics and Stacey to gather quilts for the kiddos in big and small sizes!

Let's Make A Quilt In A Day!

I had so much fun making this crib-size quilt of my pattern as, until this one, I hadn't ever actually made a baby quilt before!

I was so excited to try out a new colorway I had been scheming about. This project truly took me just a few hours to make from start to finish, and even left me a big chunk of time in my day to take my kiddos on a fun weekend adventure!

I started with the fabric pull...

I chose to work with fabrics from my stash for this project and was so happy to put them to use!

Next, was designating the color assignments.

I include a coloring page in the pattern just for this! I never get the chance to actually make/follow patterns, let alone COLOR the interactive bits, so I was thrilled to take out my colored pencils, but as soon as my daughter saw what I was up to, she asked if she could help. I could have printed another copy, but decided to just let her have a crack at it.

She had so much fun "making her own quilt" using the colors that I assigned!

After planning, it was time to get cutting!

Along with the cutting requirements in the pattern, is a corresponding set of labels that you can cut out and pin to your fabrics to help stay organized and, as someone who typically writes and tests as I go, I don't often get to enjoy this step, but just look at those satisfying little stacks sitting all tidy!

While the result is so fun and improv-inspired, the actual piecing is VERY simple and I flew through the blocks. I can definitely see myself making another one of these for baby gifts in the future!

And, voila!

After assembling the blocks into rows and stitching them together, I have a completed quilt top ready to get quilted!

You can see by the lighting in this previous photo that I WAS starting to run out of daylight for photos, but finished WELL within one day!

I can't wait to get this finished, packed up, and on its way to a little kiddo in need! I hope that you'll spread the word and join in on the Quilt Drive happening now through May!
